GROUP DISCUSSION

Opening Prayer: (1-5 minutes)
In light of what God is saying through this week’s message, here’s some suggestions of how your group can invite God into your time together.

Pray that God would open our hearts and minds to where He is directing us on our mission. Pray that God would build our faith in His direction, in how we can love Him, love others, and make disciples. Pray that God would free us from everything else that distracts us from our mission.

Quick Connection: (5 minutes)

Share about someone who has been a major positive influence in your life. How did this person shape you at the time, and how do they continue to impact you today?

Group Discussion: (30 minutes)

This week we will explore The mission we were made for.

Open your Bibles and together read Luke 19:1-10; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:42-47; 4:32-35.

Christ's mission was to seek and save the lost. It simply is not okay with God that lost people remain lost. Our purpose is Christ's purpose. His mission is our mission:

  1. To seek and save those who are lost
  2. To offer everyone who believes in Him eternal life
  3. To explain Christ as the perfect sacrifice for sin
  4. To bring healing to any sickness
  5. To offer material resources to the poor
  6. To disciple the new believers
  • Which one of these separate “sub”-missions speaks most directly to you? How would you re-order this list?

Steve Madsen laid out his vision that in 2020, Cornerstone will be a church focused on our mission...

To love God, love people and make disciples.

  • When you hear the words "go make disciples," what does that mean to you? What are some words we currently use instead of “disciple”?
  • "Seek and save the lost". How does that translate today, especially in our culture where people may or may not consider themselves “lost” and in need of saving? How can we still obey this command?

Pastor Steve said that the Church is not a building or an activity to attend. The church is its people going out into the world to share the Good News of Jesus, to explain Jesus as the perfect sacrifice for sin, and share the hope we have in Him.

  • How can your life be the sermon that people can hear? What action could you take this week?

Our mission at Cornerstone is simply “to help people take their Next Steps with Jesus.”

  • What does it mean for you personally to take your next step with Jesus? -or- What is an example of a "Next Step" you have recently taken? How can you know your next step in helping others take their next step?

CLOSING PRAYER (5-15 minutes):
In light of what God is saying through this week’s message, here’s some suggestions of what your group could talk about with God in prayer.

Pray that we would take some intentional time to reflect on our mission. Pray that God would speak to our hearts about the people we are being called to reach out to: friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, etc. Pray that God would give us courage, love and determination to accept this “mission impossible”.

CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK:

  • Reflect on anyone who has poured into you and decide to imitate them.
  • Commit to the process. Decide to obey Christ by making disciples.
  • Get involved in by signing up to serve somewhere at Cornerstone, start attending a Gathering or get involved in a Community Group. All of these are great places to learn about people's stories and discover the need for a mentor.
  • Find your disciple or mentor and start hanging out.
