What does it mean to be human through Jesus's eyes? In The Genius of Jesus, we will look at His words and actions, using them to reference how we should think and treat others like He did with empathy, power, grace, goodness, beauty, and truth. Practicing living out Jesus' words and actions will transform you, your relationships with others, and your world.
Power: noun: the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.
This world has known many powerful leaders. And yet, when it comes to Jesus, we stand in awe of His masterful use of the authority, the strength, and the abilities He possessed to change the world. He had unlimited authority at His fingertips, yet He never chose to use His power for His own benefit. If we ever want to know the power of God, we must fully embrace the heart of God. To follow Jesus is to imitate Jesus.
This week in CF Online, Steve Madsen continues the series, The Genius of Jesus, looking at power. If you have not had a chance to watch his message, we highly encourage you to do so, as it will help provide context moving forward. You can watch it HERE.
After Steve's message, Elisha Bongay (CF San Ramon Valley Pastor/Worship Leader) and CF Online Pastor Christiaan VandenHeuvel sat down for a conversation. Let's listen in! Their conversation will prompt you to think about the questions listed below.
“Power gives freedom to what has been hidden within the human heart. Power tells the truth about who we are. Power sets free what has been imprisoned within you.” - Erwin Raphael McManus
Whether you find yourself with a group, a friend, a family member, or are by yourself, take some time to read, process, and discuss/journal through the questions below.
-
Define power.
-
Who comes to mind when you think of power? Why?
-
Compare and contrast the effects of power when experienced through oppression vs. humility.
-
Jesus turned the world upside down when it came to power. Instead of stealing dignity through power, He freely gave dignity to others. Reflect and discuss different ways Jesus calls us to use our power. How will this impact your family, co-workers, friends, and community?
-
Taking one of Erwin's direct questions for his book, The Genius of Jesus, Who would you be if you were FREE to be yourself? Consider that question this week.
