"God Helps Those Who Help Themselves" — Did Jesus Actually Say That?

Stuff Jesus Didn't Say

April 11, 2026Cornerstone Fellowship Sermons

Previous Page

"God helps those who help themselves." Many people assume Jesus said this. He didn't. And the idea behind it has done more harm than we realize.

In this message by pastor Steve Ingold, we look at a story Jesus told in Luke 16 about a wealthy man and a poor man named Lazarus. They lived at the same address. One inside, one at the gate. The wealthy man wasn't cruel. He was just comfortable. And Jesus makes clear that comfort, when it keeps us from moving toward others, is its own kind of failure.

We also unpack why this phrase is so appealing, what it does to how we see suffering, and what Jesus actually modeled instead.

If you've ever used this phrase, believed it, or had it said to you at the wrong moment, this one is worth your time.
