In John's epistles, a reader may notice that he makes a point to repeat himself several times, all while seeming to take a step away from the topic before returning to a central issue, almost as if he's seemingly wandering before remembering what he's writing about. This isn't the rambling of an elder, but a carefully thought out structure- one that helps to give us a Christians a frame work to follow a simple plan to help us strengthen our faith.
