Concerning New vs Old Covenant

08Jun

This week's message talked about the differences between the covenant between the Israelites & God in Exodus and how it differs from the new covenant that Jesus offers us. Consider these questions as they apply to your life.

Are you more inclined to be a rule follower or a rule breaker?

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34 - 35

What situations make it challenging to live out these two commands from Jesus? What does love require in those situations?

Share a personal experience when you received this love from someone.

Take a few of the 10 Commandments using modern language and through the lens of Jesus, to put a more positive spin on them. (Maybe this could be your group’s take on the Ingold Family Constitution)

Example:
You shall have not other gods before me.
Modern:
Love the LORD God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Identify and remove (or reprioritize) anyTHING I treat as more important than God. Or hiders a deep personal relationship with God.

Pastor Steve says, “ We are saved and have the opportunity to be saved from our old selves because of Jesus.” What do you need Jesus to save you from today?

The message points out God’s desire to have a one on one relationship with Him. Name one thing you will do this week to nurture a closeness with God.

Pastor Steve mentions “What would Jesus do?” and “What does love require?” as helpful to him to navigate the world and relationships. Share a quote that is just as helpful to you.
